OSTEOPATHY

Osteopathy in Tavira, Algarve

Osteopathy is a manual therapy that focuses on assessment, treatment and prevention of wide range of health problems. Osteopaths use combination of soft tissue treatment, stretching, movement, joint mobilisation/manipulation, kinesio-taping and acupuncture to relieve pain, improve function and aid recovery.

Conditions treated

Osteopaths treat wide range of conditions including back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, foot and ankle problems, hand and elbow injuries, hip pain, arthritis, headaches, sport injuries and many more. Some problems respond to treatment relatively quickly, some chronic conditions might require ongoing management.

Your first appointment

At the first appointment I will take a full case history to understand what might be causing your symptoms. The osteopathic evaluation includes palpation and postural as well as movement assessment. I might want to move your joints passively to conclude the evaluation.

Clothing

To be able to to evaluate and treat you efficiently, I recommend you dress down to appropriate underwear or bring shorts and vest. It is important that you feel comfortable and that I am able to assess you and access the area causing pain effectively and easily.

Osteopathy vs Physiotherapy

Osteopathy and physiotherapy are similar in many aspects. Osteopaths spend 4 or 5 years studying musculo-skletal system whereas physiotherapists are also trained in other forms of rehabilitation such as respiratory, cardiovascular or neurological. Osteopathy training takes one year longer and includes very hands approach whereas physiotherapy is predominantly exercise based.
